Star Wars is a pretty magical universe filled with all sorts of insanely cools things. Who could ever picture the underwater worlds, planet size battleships, jumps to lightspeed or any of the other things that came from George Lucas’ imagination. One of the coolest aspect of Star Wars is all of the different droids that are a part of the series. Here are five of the coolest droids that have popped up during Star Wars.
An astromech droid, R2D2 is one of the core characters in all of the Star Wars films. He is highly adaptable, doing well on ships, dealing with technical issues, or helping in any way that you would need. He has been in some of the most important and critical missions such as bringing Princess Lea’s transmission to Obi-Wan Kenobi when she was being held by Darth Vader. R2D2 has been a droid with both Anakin Skywalker and Luke Skywalker, spanning generations and much of the time in the films.
A protocol droid, C3PO is almost always found with his friend R2D2. C3PO is far less competent than R2D2 though, not really providing much in the way of useful assistance or any sort of independent efforts. C3PO’s main skill is that he speaking tons of different languages and so can help translate different things. One of the cool fun facts about C3PO is he was first built by a young Anakin Skywalker, although from there he travels all over including to the Senate and becoming Luke Skywalker’s droid for a while.
General Grievous is perhaps the most powerful droid that was ever built in the series and he is one of the principal antagonists of the Separatist movement during the clone wars. As one of the generals for the separatist army, Grievous leads many battles against the Jedi and leads them into several traps. His extreme fighting prowess comes from the ability to move really quickly like a spider but also to wield up to four different lightsabers at once. Grievous meets his end during the clone wars after a tough battle against Obi-Wan Kenobi.
DUM-series Pit Droids
DUM-series Pit Droids are cute but incredibly stupid droids that are a heavy feature in the pod racing scene. They appear many times during the various pod races both before, after, and during while Anakin is racing. These droids are so dumb that they’ve been known to get sucked into the pod racers but they can end up being pretty useful for repairs because of their dedication to repairs and unintelligent diregard for danger. They’re characterized by the one circular camera that protrudes from their head.
IG-88 Bounty Hunter Droid
The IG-88 is a battle droid, an assassin, and a bounty hunter. Its face and whole body are covered in weapons and it carries a blaster in addition to that. The rumors are it is so dedicated to destroying things that when it was first created it destroyed all of the scientists who created it. The IG-88 appears throughout many parts of Star Wars, including when he was hired to hunt down the millenium falcon by Darth Vader.
